The Berenstein/Berenstain Bears

I'll start with the one that freaks people out the most. Like many other kids, I grew up reading The Berenstein Bears books. Berenstein, with an "e". We even debated the pronunciation of "stein", whether it was pronounced like it was in "Einstein" or Goldstein.. Other people have debated the pronunciation as well, so I was shocked when I learned of the Mandela Effect saw that it was spelled "Berenstain". I even had my mom dig out my old books from the 70s and lo and behold, they said, "Berenstain".

How could this be when so many of us distinctly remember it being spelled "stein", not "stain"? My mom read me these books long before I could read them myself. I remember tracing the cursive writing of the book title with my finger as I was learning to write in cursive. Are we to believe that hordes of people, children and adults alike misread a simple word for decades? Is Berenstain even a name? The only reference to this name with a quick Google search is to these books. There are, however, people with the name Berenstein.

Even professional newspaper editors "misread" the name as well.
