Where Pets Go to Die

I got a double Mandela Effect out of this one. Before we get to the title of the book, let's address "cemetary" or "cemetery". In my memory, it's "cemetary", although now, that's just considered a misspelling. In the examples of the main ME here, this spelling is often used.

Ok, to the main event! Stephen King's famous novel/movie. Let me start by saying that my mom was a huge Stephen King fan and up until a point, she owned ever book he had written. Some in hardback AND paperback. I saw these book covers from the time I was a small child. Pet Cemetery was one of the scariest ones that she described to me years before the movie came out. I saw that book cover many times over the years and I certainly would have noticed the odd spelling of "cemetery", which is now "sematary".

Why would it even be spelled like that now? "Sematary" certainly isn't a word. Someone said it was a child's spelling, as the main character in the book is a child, but you'd think a child would choose -ery over -ary as the literal spelling of the word, which brings us back to the "cemetary" vs. "cemetery" conundrum.

Although the book says "sematary", the listing says "cemetary".

This "sematary" looks really strange to me as if the spelling of my name just up and changed. Seriously, seeing this cover is like being in the effing Twilight Zone because I've looked at it so many times.  Everywhere you can find the book listed as "cemetery" or "cemetary", none of this "semetary" BS!

I could be here all night with all the examples of "cemetery", not including the references where the title says "cemetery", but the picture of the book or text in the article says "sematary".

 And for cemetary:

Yup! We're in The Twilight Zone!

  1. I clearly remember the titel of this movie being spelled as "Pet Sematary". That's also how it is spelled in a movie encyclopedia that I own.

    3. I remember "cemetary". I actually remember the title of this movie because the unusal spelling made it stand out. It's a bit hard to believe that Stephen King, a former English teacher, would have misspelled the word.
