Preface 5-10-2017: I am creating this preface so that no one repeats that Rio was the capital of Brazil until the 60s. Supposedly. Like other ME, dates don't match up. I went to school in the 80s and 90s ans was taught that Rio was the capital. Many people say they never heard of Brasilia until after ME. I could only find pre-60s articles, but we are living in a time where info is being quickly erased.
Geography related MEs really bother me because as a child, I loved geography and had maps on everything including my shower curtain, purse, and shoes. Anyway, I knew the capitals of all the states and major countries, so I was surprised to learn recently that Rio de Janeiro was not the capital of Brazil, it was Brasilia. No effing way!
This map shows the star next to Rio, indicating that it's the capital. Brasilia isn't even on this map! According to the owner, this map was bought in 2016.
Check out question #4 and the answer below. In 1949, someone asked whether Rio was the capital of Brazil or Argentina. Ding, ding, ding! Brazil!
Many articles state that Rio is the capital of Brazil.
Even in a Spanish language newspaper, they state that Rio is the capital.
Yes, Rio was the capital on the old Earth.

Well, this one is not a mandela effect, Rio was capital of Brazil until 1960, when they made the new city of brasilia. NOT A MANDELA EFFECT.
ReplyDeleteThis is a Mandela Effect because growing up in the 80s and 90, we were taught that Rio was still the capital. Many people say they never even heard of Brasilia before The Mandela Effect. The first picture here is from a map that someone bought in 2016. Why would they selling a supposed current map with Rio as the capital if it hadn't been so in 40 years?
DeleteThis is like every other ME where dates don't match up. Companies say that their logo has been a certain way since 1945 or something, yet people alive in subsequent decades saw a different logo. Same sh*t.
I always knew the Capital to be Rio, my whole life. Never before today have I even heard of Brasilia! As it turns out, not only is it the capital, but it's a interesting city...the type of city one would remember! NEVER HEARD OF IT! This is the equivalent to me of the capital of Texas being Texasville, and back in 1972 it moved from Austin to Texasville. Just because there is a narrative about the capital moving 50 odd years ago does not disprove the Mandela affect. Get straight on the concept of the Mandela affect before you go dismissing it, if you can. So if you grew up always knowing about Brasilia, that means you have always been on that timeline. And those of us who grew up knowing the capital was Rio were on another timeline, and those two have now merged. I believe they actually merged right around the last elections. I felt very strongly when Trump won that we shifted timelines. This has nothing to do with politics....it's about what timelines we are living in. The earth is shifting and separating and eventually the mass timeline will divide, and some of us will be on one timeline, and the rest will be on another.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I really feel like the 2012, end of the world scenario was real, although the world didn't "end" per se, just shifted somehow. Some people feel that there have been several shifts. We are living in strange times! Thanks for reading!
DeleteThat was hands down the best analogy ever! I only found out about Brasilia two days ago, and while admittedly I have never been a big geography buff, when I first took Spanish in the 1990s I had to label a map of South America with the names of the countries and their capitals, which to this day have stayed with me...and there was no Brasilia back then! About half the people I asked have never even heard of it...wouldn't the name of the capital of a country as huge as Brazil, especially when it is so similar to the name of the country it is the capital of, at least sound somewhat FAMILIAR??
DeleteI knew that there was a city called Brasilia growing up, but not as the capital. I only knew this because I was a nerdy kid looking at maps and globes all the time. I've never heard the city mentioned otherwise and I am over the age of 40. In this 2016 article, Rio is still listed as the capital: https://mandelaeffectproof.blogspot.com/2017/05/her-name-is-rio.html. Thanks for reading!
